Background of the Study
Financial mismanagement in education can have far-reaching effects on the quality of learning and overall educational outcomes. In rural areas of Nigeria, such as Katsina State, many secondary schools struggle with inadequate funding, poor financial oversight, and mismanagement of the limited resources available to them (Dikko & Sulaimon, 2024). These challenges significantly impact the quality of education, as schools are unable to provide necessary teaching materials, maintain infrastructure, or pay qualified staff on time.
The lack of proper financial management in rural secondary schools exacerbates existing inequalities in the education system, where students in rural areas often receive subpar education compared to their urban counterparts. Misallocation of funds, corruption, and inefficient use of resources contribute to the poor infrastructure, low morale among teachers, and high dropout rates among students. The situation is further compounded by the lack of effective financial auditing systems to detect and correct mismanagement practices. This study will examine how financial mismanagement in rural secondary schools in Katsina State affects educational outcomes and explore the underlying causes and consequences of this issue.
Statement of the Problem
In Katsina State, rural secondary schools often face the dual challenge of limited financial resources and ineffective financial management. As a result, these schools suffer from inadequate teaching resources, poorly maintained infrastructure, and insufficient compensation for teachers, all of which negatively impact educational outcomes. The mismanagement of funds and lack of transparency in the allocation of resources hinder the schools’ ability to meet their educational goals, resulting in a decline in academic performance and overall student achievement. This study aims to assess the impact of financial mismanagement on educational outcomes in rural secondary schools in Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on rural secondary schools in Katsina State and examine how financial mismanagement influences educational outcomes. Data will be collected from school administrators, teachers, students, and local education authorities. Limitations include the potential difficulty in accessing certain schools due to remote locations and the reliability of data provided by school administrators.
